Activated Charcoal has been the beauty ingredient of the year, with it popping up on the shelves across the country claiming to help clear skin, whiten teeth and detox hair. Activated charcoal is regular charcoal that is processed at high temperatures which changes its internal structure and produces a more porous ‘activated’ charcoal. Activated charcoal is great for pulling out impurities from the skin and teeth. Below I’ll let you know how to shop the trend, whilst staying vegan and cruelty free.
I got this wonderful mask from a VOBEAUTY box and absolutely love it. Mine came with a free applicator which really helps smooth the sticky charcoal mask on to skin. Peeling off this mask is reminiscent of peeling off PVA glue from your fingers after finishing a primary school art project (aka super satisfying). Watch this gorgeous mask in use here.
Whilst typically sceptical about ‘natural’ teeth whiteners, I couldn’t resist buying a pot of this whitening powder after seeing it cropping up repeatedly on my insta-feed. I was absolutely stunned by the results! The biggest and most noticeable difference was following the first use with a friend even commenting ‘Woah – what have you done to your teeth?’ I haven’t noticed much difference in daily usage, I think this is just a really good exfoliator for your teeth once a week, or before special events to give them a good deep clean. For those that care, this is fluoride free.
For those among us that loves a good nose strip to declog pores – try out this new charcoal variety from Superdrug. These promise to unclog pores, remove excess oil and contribute to a clearer complexion.

This budget toothpaste is an easy way to achieve whiter teeth. The results aren’t dramatic but this reliable toothpaste will keep teeth and gums healthy with whitening charcoal and maximum fluoride protection. Not to mention, it’s pretty cool brushing with black toothpaste.
Oil pulling, swishing oil in the mouth for a few minutes on an empty stomach, is on the rise as it extracts toxins from the mouth. Use this charcoal oil pulling mouthwash for 5-10 minutes a couple of mornings each week for better breath, healthier gums and clearer teeth. Georganics is a great brand which are Peta-certified and use plastic-free/zero waste packaging.
This scrub will use charcoal to pull impurities from the skin and uses prickly pear oil to moisturise and soften skin. This product contains no plastic micro beads and is SLS free. This is deeply cleansing and wonderfully balancing.
